  EUROPEAN IDENTITY IN THE INFORMATION
  SOCIETY
  Information & Communications Technologies (ICTs) impact upon the
  way we learn and work in Europe's new Information Society. Email,
  the Web and videoconferencing put us in touch with fellow Europeans
  but language and cultural differences still present dialogic challenges.
  Telecosm 2000 explores those challenges.

  KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

  Professor Frank Webster University of Birmingham
  New Politics & ICTs
  Professor Frank Webster has written widely on the changes brought
  about by the Information Age. His 1995 book Theories of the
  Information Society is an excellent synthesis of ideas from European
  thinkers, including Habermas, Giddens, Baudrillard and Lyotard.


  Professeur Ã?ric Guichard - The Internet Atelier
  �cole Normale Supérieure, Paris
  Networks, Knowledge, and Territories
  Since 1995, the �cole Normale Supérieure's Internet Atelier has
  brought together researchers from various disciplines involved in
  assessing the impact of computer technology on the worlds of
  knowledge. Among the issues addressed are writing processes, the
  research of information, exchange networks, and the transmission of
  knowledge.

CONVENOR

Charlie Mansfield is a researcher in the Centre for European
Studies. His work looks at knowledge values in the Information
Society in Europe. His doctoral work examines identity formation in
telematic exchanges between members of different language groups
using dialogic analysis.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers are sought on the subject of European identity in the
Information Society. It is expected that academics from a range of
disciplines will be interested in presenting papers. Peer reviewed
papers from the conference will be published in the THE JOURNAL OF
EUROPEAN CULTURE IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY.

PUBLICATION
THE JOURNAL OF EUROPEAN CULTURE IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
(ISSN 1464-6331) is an on-line, web-based international publication
of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Sunderland.

LANGUAGES
Papers are accepted in English and in French.
Papers and presentations may be given in English or French; English
sub-titles or OHPs should be provided for presentation on the day.
Question interpreters will be available between French & English.
German, Spanish, Russian and Japanese are also studied at the
University and every endeavour will be made to accommodate
speakers of these languages.

CENTRE FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES
Unit of Assessment 48 at the University of Sunderland achieved a
rating of 3b in the last RAE. The Centre focusses upon the cultural
aspects of European Studies with important work in the areas of film
and literary studies, in social, economic and political studies, in
language learning and new work in European information society
studies.
