Personally I'd not hesitate to run a low volume quality mailing list like nettime
on $20 raspberry pi zero in my home network, a spare pi next to the working 
one, a daily snapshot/backup of the entire system. 
and btw, virtual server has quite some advantages over one running on dedicated hardware, 
except for some databases and some firewalls...
