CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: web art projects (please forward)

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of La Centrale, Gail Bourgeois is
organizing a thematic exhibition entitled amour-horreur. For this
occasion, in collaboration with Studio XX, La Centrale is seeking 5
thematic web art projects conceived and executed specifically for the
Internet.

Information required
Projects may include Real Video/Audio, Shockwave, Quicktime, etc. All
projects should be on the web or forwarded on diskette (Mac or PC) by
the submission deadline, March 1st, 1999. Selected projects will be
hosted for an indefinite period, not less than one year, by La Centrale
and Studio XX. As well, they will be presented in the gallery for the
duration of the second exhibition, amour-horreur. The vernissage will be
held April 17, 1999.

Curatorial Theme
There is an interesting oppositional tendency in some art production in
the 1990's. This work seeks to position itself outside the mainstream to
better see artistic and social conventions. Some of this work falls into
the category of 'abject art', but in fact all such work reinstates
corporeality with its inherent contradictions. For the project
amour-horreur, what interests me is a reclaiming of the material body.
This reclamation can not be done in any straightforward way, but the
(abject) body is a potential site of transgression and feminist
intervention.

Works by women which explore notions of horror, abjection, and love will
be considered. These criteria can be expressed in a variety of ways.
Some possible sub-themes might be :
+ The Social Body - sites of resistance.
+ Nasty Girls Rebellion - the total body of experience of violence - the
addictive adenaline rush.
+ Lesbien Reflections - the phantasm of the archaic mother versus
wanking off, or public sex or the body "out of bounds".
+ Expelled - from the body, unsettling the boundaries between "I" and
"you".
+ Desire - how to invent it ?
+ Articulate Love - how to speak of love - metaphoric body imaging, and
self-portraits.

The works selected for the exhibition will have, as one element of
intention, a preoccupation with liminal states and transformation.

Artists whose work is selected will be paid an artist fee of $150
(Canadian).

A l'occasion du 25e anniversaire de La Centrale, Gail Bourgeois organise
une exposition thematique qui s'intitule amour-horreur (love-horror). La
Centrale, en collaboration avec le Studio XX, cherche 5 projets
d'artistes pour le web.

Les projets peuvent inclure Real Video/Audio, Shockwave, Quicktime, etc.
Tous les projets devraient etre sur le web ou achemines sur disquette
(Mac ou PC) le 1er mars 1999. Les projets retenus seront diffuses durant
au moins un an, par La Centrale et le Studio XX. Ils seront aussi
presentes a la Centrale durant le deuxieme volet d'amour-horreur, du 17
avril au 30 mai 1999.

Thematique
Dans l'art actuel se decele une interessante tendance a l'opposition.
Des artistes inscrivent leur production en marge du courant dominant
afin de mieux reveler les conventions artistiques ou sociales. Alors que
leurs ?uvres cherchent a retablir la realite physique du corps avec ses
contradictions inherentes, elles tombent dans la categorie dite de "l'
art abject". 

amour-horreur s'articulera autour de la revendication et de la
recuperation de la materialite du corps. Une telle reconquete ne peut se
faire de maniere simple et directe, mais le corps (abject) est un site
possible de transgression et d'intervention feministe.

Gail Bourgeois cherche des ?uvres traitant d'horreur, d'abjection et
d'amour, qui abordent les questions de transformation et d'etats
liminaux. L'exploration de ces notions peut prendre des formes variees
et s'exprimer sur des themes tels que :
+ Le corps social - lieux de resistance
+ Rebellion des p'tites garces - l'experience corporelle de la violence
qu'on exerce, le gout pour la bagarre et les decharges d'adrenaline
qu'elle declenche
+ Reflexions lesbiennes - le fantasme de la mere archaïque par
opposition a la branlette, au sexe dans les lieux publics ou au corps
feminin debride
+ Eliminer, evacuer du corps- deranger les limites entre " je" et "tu"
+ Le Desir - comment l'inventer ?
+ Articuler l'amour - comment parler d'amour ? Images metaphoriques du
corps et autoportraits.

Les ?uvres retenues pour l'exposition devront comprendre des elements
relatifs aux etats liminaux et a la transformation.

Le cachet pour une ?uvre est de 150 $.
