Dear friends,
we are happy to announce:

A SHORT HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC ART
- PART ONE -

in CINEMA - REX, BELGRADE
11 - 17 April

The first part of our project is a series of lectures and dialogues with
artists who constituted the "Association of Electronic Media Artists", in
1991 when the last group exhibition of computer art has been held
in Belgrade (ULUS gallery, May 8 - 23), mostly with the same authors as
participants.

There was a very intensive and numerous group of artists with different
discourses to the new media at that time. Some of them came from
experimental video, some from conceptual art or minimal, or
electronic/computer music, closely connected with artists from different
countries, thus creating a Yu-media stage as part of the international
one.

But then the war started. The Association has never been registrated. The
years of destruction, disorientation, despair and disappearance of
everything that used to be, poverty and hard life in a paranoid
environment became a reality. Some of the artists have left the country,
the ones that stayed behind have lost connection with the rest of the
world, they drowned in everyday problems of
survival in circumstances of civil war. And lot of them had no
opportunity to continue their experiments: no equipment, no subvention
from any cultural fund, none or very few information about what was going
on in art and technology. They were cut off from their surrounding and the
rest of the world, loosing their context and any kind of feedback.

But through all these years, there was a dispersed individual artistic
practice in this domain. For a number of intellectuals escapism with
autoisolation as a way of living was the only possible choice in those
circumstances.

The moment when Internet finally appeared here, a very long time after
it has appeared as a kind of revolution in "outer space", some new
generations became familliar with new art forms, and very few of
previous ones. So there was the situation where two parallel streams from
basically the same origin existed in the same space/time, with no
communication or any exchange. The necessity to make some kind of
recapitulation and synthesis became obvious.

We are hoping that young authors will join this project, and develop it, by
presenting new ideas, in order to articulate the artistic scene here and
create theoretical discourse to new forms of art through new technologies .

Our intention is to make some continuity in collecting and archiving data
about those activities as well, presenting different phases of it's'
evolution together with updates, thus giving the opportunity to the
audience, especially the younger generations, for better understanding of
various forms of electronic art.

The following parts of our project will keep on presenting discourses on
that new category of contemporary art by inviting authors and theorists
from abroad, as well as from our country.
