whenever i see the word millennium, i reach for the delete button.

just imagine:

June 998; some philosophers of Cordoba and Constantinople are in a vivid
exchange of letters about the meaning of the upcoming millennium; how far
would their fantasy have reached? what would it have meant for them to say
something like 'the question of life, the universe and everything will be
the question of the next millennium'? other thinkers living with other
calendars in other parts of this planet, placed uncomfortably at the
intersection of future intergalactic highways, will have made similarly
grandiose and useless claims at other points in history.

i really don't get it: forget the millennium!
