Dutch Electronic Art Festival DEAF98

Thursday, 19 November, 20.30-23.00

Nettime presentation

Nettime is an international online-forum about media culture and net
criticism. The Nettime mailing list was established in the Spring of 1995,
it's number of subscribers growing from 20 to over 800. Regular meetings,
conferences, workshops and media events, as well as four xeroxed 'ZKP'
readers, are real-life channels for the heterogeneous group of subscribers
and contributors. Topics discussed on the list include the Net's gift
economy, networking and strategies for activists on the net, net.art, the
role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the future of publishing.

The Nettime evening during DEAF98 features the premier presentation of
'README!', the first international publication of the Nettime mailing list.
This 500-page book (published by Autonomedia, New York) collects over a
hundred texts and other contributions and offers a highly substantial
account of contemporary thought and critical debate about Internet culture.

The presentation is followed by a panel discussion about the role that
electronic networks play in the de- and reconstruction of the public
sphere, and about the emergent social topologies they generate.
