The OPEN SOCIETY FUND PRAGUE (OSF Prague) was founded in 1992
following George Soros decision to end cooperation with the Charter 77
Foundation in Prague, an organization which he had financially
supported from its establishment.

OSF Prague began its existence as a very small office aiming to secure
participation for what was then Czechoslovakia in the international
programs of the Soros foundations in Central and Eastern Europe. Due
to various circumstances the Foundation initially lacked the favorable
conditions required for its own development, but the situation
gradually changed, and today the foundation supports an entire series
of programs and activities, the common goal of which is the
development of an open society in Czech Republic.

OSF Prague is a part of the international network of Soros foundations
in Central and Eastern Europe working together in many regions. George
Soros is founder of the Open Society Fund New York, and of the network
of foundations throughout Central and Eastern Europe. In 1996 the
financial expenditure on OSF Prague programs was an approximate 55
million CZK (2 million USD) for Educational Programs, Arts and
Culture, and Civil Society.
