DIGITALE '97 - Digital Dialects
Cinemathek Cologne in Ludwig Museum, October 1 - 3, 1997

The 4th DIGITALE will be taking place at the Cinemathek Cologne from
October 1 - 3, 1997. The primary focus of the DIGITALE «97 will assess the
possible existence of "Digital Dialects": What influences do regional
characteristics have on the production of moving pictures and is there more
hidden behind digital technologies than their universal applicability?

3-D movies and projection screens reaching 1,000 sq. meters challenge film
making and the integration of computers. This refers to the huge quantities
of data needed to film as well as the use of computer-generated images for
the new 3-dimensional movie format. The three mornings have been set aside
to discuss the historical and economical constraints of new technologies
dealing with image maximization (Wednesday, October 1, 1997), digital
development work in this research field (Thursday, October 1, 1997) and
lastly production constraints and competitive opportunities for the largest
film experience for the senses (Friday, October 3, 1997).

SÃ?O PAULO - Wednesday, October 1, 1997
Brazil is an electronic goldmine - one of the largest television nations of
the world that has become the centre of a new generation of image artists
since the end of the military regime. Artists there use non-linear
techniques and cuts in order to modify or slow down the television cycle.
They deceive and disturb, jump and dribble to place their moving pictures.
Invited are, among others, Marcelo Tas (founding member of Olhar
Eletronico), Eder Santos, (videoart), Waly Salomâ?¹o (theory/poetry), Carlos
Nader (visual prose and poetry), Martha Nehring, Maria Oliveira
(documentary video).

MOSCOW - Thursday, October 2, 1997
Russian inventors and artists did not wait for Bill Gates to digitise the
country. Filmmakers like Vladimir Kobrin, animation film experts such as
Nicolai Izvolov and network artists and curators like Alexei Shulgin and
Tatiana Detkina present works in which the power of historical machines,
film experiments and modern animation techniques cross over. Andrei Smirnov
will present a programme section that has been dedicated to the work of the
Theremin-Centre. Stanislav Kreichi and Vechislav Koleichuk have been
working in the surroundings of the Theremin Center and use an
ANS-Synthesizer to probe the region between sound and picture movements.
A synergy of past and future, electrification, networks and digitalization
- the convergence of computer and film - will be guest on this day in
Cologne.

TOKYO - Friday, October 3, 1997
The perpetual danger of earthquakes and catastrophes has shaped Tokyo's
city planning and the Japanese vision of man and machine relationship. It
has since become the icon of pop culture, absorbed through Japanese Mangas
(comics) and Animes (cartoons) by millions of people in subways, reading
rooms, in front of computer games and television series. Manga designers,
theorists and directors will introduce these aspects of pop culture and
discuss the interrelation of traditional drawings and computer and between
tradition and innovation, in the shadow of a city, that lives with the
knowledge that its high-rise buildings could, from one day to the next,
plunge to their depths.
With Buichi Terasawa, Junco Ito, Keita Kurosaka, Koichi Ohata, Toshiya
Ueno, Nobu Kanaoka. The programme is being developed with kind support
of Karl-Heinz Neubert, Christoph Lamprecht, Stephan Holl, Hirochimi Motoki.

DIGITALE«s daily programme will be expanded to include a permanent presence
in the Internet. The artist group knowbotic research (Christian HŸbler,
Alexander Tuchacek and Yvonne Wilhelm) is implementing "Digitale on the
Net" that will build a forum for creative exchange even after the Cologne

The DIGITALE «97 is organised by the Academy of Media Arts Cologne,
commissioned by the Ministry of Economics, Technology and Transport of
Northrhein-Westfalia and in co-operation with the City of Cologne.
Responsible for concept and realisation are Nils RÅ¡ller and Prof. Dr.
Siegfried Zielinski. The DIGITALE «97 is supported by SONY Germany within
its programme for the arts entitled "Building bridges".
