This new work by Anne Bevan is about being above, below and on 'a level'.
It explores the physical effects of weightlessness, weight and buoyancy,
through the movement of objects through air and water. The work exists in
two forms: as an installation of video projection, sound and sculpture, and
as a limited edition CD-ROM with miniature sculptures. The CD-ROM is
planned for wider publication later in the year.

'I was interested in the actual experience of being under a water level -
how it effects the breath and hearing, pressure and balance. This can be a
really common experience, like having the head under water in a swimming
pool, or bath. However I was also interested in the less familiar, in for
example, deep sea or S.A.T. diving where the physical limits of the body
are tested, sometimes to an extreme.'

The location for this research was Aberdeen, ideal for its connections
with the oil and fishing industries. Most of the video work was undertaken
with the assistance of sub aqua divers at a safety training pool for
offshore oil workers belonging to RGIT Montrose. Other sources were the
National Hyperbaric Centre, local swimming baths and the sea.

The work involved 'experiments' with for example, shipping floats, cast
aluminium forms, balloons, weights, bubbles, oxygen and helium. The
movement of these hollow forms through air or water is a central image,
recorded through video. The accompanying sound work also traces and
measures these levels.

level is a New Media Scotland commission in partnership with Peacock Visual
Arts, with funding from the Scottish Arts Council's National Lottery Fund.
