Die Ausstellung >Media Variations< bietet ein Spektrum junger finnischer
Gegenwartskunst. Auf Einladung der lothringer13 stellt die 1987 in Helsinki
gegründete >artist association< MUU erstmalig in München sieben junge
finnische Künstler vor. Neben Videoinstallationen und einem Internetprojekt
umfasst diese Ausstellung auch Malerei, Zeichnung und Fotografie. Die
Künstler reflektieren, inwiefern neue Technologien die künstlerische Praxis,
die
Wahrnehmung des eigenen Ichs und unsere Lebenswelt beeinflussen. Sie
integrieren
und kombinieren unterschiedliche mediale Strategien und loten das
Spannungsfeld
zwischen künstlerischen Medium und visueller Bildsprache aus.

Rita Leppiniemi zeigt mit >PhobiaMuseum< ein Internetprojekt, das dem
Ausstellungsbesucher auf spielerische Weise ein Angebot unterbreitet: Die
Künstlerin befragte Leute nach ihren persönlichen Phobien und setzt diese
in interaktive Websites und Animationen um.
Mikko Maasalo reizt das Thema der Abstraktion aus: Für die Videoinstallation
>ultima thule< nimmt eine Kamera die Oberflächenspannung von
Gas und Flüssigkeit auf. Dies wird malerisch in der Serie >Chromium Oxide
Green< umgesetzt. Die Fotoserien >A Shade of Red< von Sari Tervaniemi und
>I Can’t Remember Why I’am Here< von Lena Séraphin loten das Medium
Fotografie
und den Bereich zwischen Realität und Fiktion auf ironische Weise aus. Ihre
Arbeiten integrieren narrative Elemente und bedienen sich einer kinemato-
grafischen Bildsprache. Auf diese Weise entstehen Fragmente der
Verunsicherung,
die in bedrohliche Situationen umkippen können. Die Videoinstallation >Space
and
Time< von Pia Euro beschäftigt sich mit der Nicht-Linearität von Momenten.
Für
ihre Arbeit platziert sie Videomonitore in einer auf den jeweiligen Raum
ausgerichteten
Anordnung. Das Vergehen der Zeit macht sie als intensives Moment mit
persönlichem Bezug sichtbar. Hanna Maria Anttila konzentriert sich in
>Surface and Milk< auf die Schwierigkeit, das eigene Ich in Abgrenzung zu
dem Anderen zu definieren. Typisch
für ihre Arbeitsweise ist die Bezugnahme auf den Raum und die repetitive
Struktur
ihrer Videobilder. Diese Mittel setzt sie ein, um das Innere visuell zu
erkunden,
das sprachlich nicht erfasst werden kann. Die Installation von Stig
Baumgartner mit
dem Titel >Projection< ist Ergebnis einer Auseinandersetzung mit
Performance, Zeichnung
und Video. Er manipuliert und übersetzt seine Erfahrung von Zeit und
Bewegung auf eine zweidimensionale Oberfläche, um nicht zuletzt auch die
Zeitlichkeit von Wahrnehmung zu hinterfragen.

This exhibition, Media Variations, of works from seven emerging young
media artists of MUU, includes drawings, photographs, Internet art and
video installations.
The artists participating in Media Variations all work within the various
contemporary forms of art media engaging themselves in the processes of
using technology and how their ideas are influenced and interpreted by it.
They also share a common interest in exploring the potential and meaning of
how it mediats the ways of perceiving notions of others and self as well as
connections to their personal life and environment.
The exhibition includes a playful Internet project by Rita Leppiniemi,
>Phobia Museum<, that functions as a proposition. Its purpose to ask people
to send in their personal phobias whereby Rita then transforms and animates
them into interactive webpages. Mikko Maasalo presents an ambiguous
abstraction in the video installation, >ultima thule< where the camera is
set to record the events of surface tension between gas and liquid, and in
his series of paintings, >Chromium Oxide Green<, a static trace of fluidity.
Two photograph installation series by Sari Tervaniemi, >A Shade of Red< and
Lena Séraphin, >I Can´t Remember Why I´m Here<, use parody to explore the
realms between fact and fiction. The use of narrative with a cinematic
appearance presents fragments of uncertain and perhaps threatening
situations. The video installation of Pia Euro looks at the nonlinearity of
moments in a three-dimensional structure. Her piece >Space and Time<, places
the monitors in an open form with a personal reference to the passing of
time as a very intense moment. Hanna Maria Anttila's >Surface< and >Milk<,
look at the difficulty of defining oneself and confronting another. Typical
characteristics of her work are sparce imagery, repetitive structure and
visual insights that seldom can be captured by language. Stig Baumgartner's
drawing installation, >Projection<, is a result of his involvement with
performance, drawing and video. He manipulates and translates his experience
of time and movement onto a two dimensional surfaces to question notions,
among other things, the of temporality of perception.
