"NEW LANDS"

Ca sa descopere teritorii noi, domnitorul descaleca de undeva de sus de pe
animalul regal, ca sa inceapa taiatul, sa inceapa sa faca loc si sa
defriseze.
A descoperi pamantul, a fonda tara, inseamna, intr-un sens primar, a o
curata de padure. Dupa lumea noua, dupa epoca descoperirilor, dupa
colonizarea Africii, cele mai mari descoperiri teritoriale au avut loc dupa
1989. Marile dezastre ecologice, cernobalurile si industriile grele au
etanseizat parca lagarul comunist si au izolat o zona, o rezervatie unde
visele antreprenorilor capitalisti puteau deveni realitate. Cortina de fier
si zidurile au mentinut mari portiuni din lagarul comunist inca verzi si
impadurite, greu accesibile investitorilor, impotmolind senila capitalului.
Imaginile acestea demonstreaza ca Evul Mediu nu a fost depasit, ci a fost
mai curand mutat si permanentizat in alte teritorii descoperite in lumea a
doua ori a treia. Ca atare, putem demonstra ca Evul Mediu nu este o
perioada intunecata situata in trecutul istoric, ci o epoca permutabila
acolo unde dorul expansiunii, al colonizarii interne si curatarii
teritoriale dainuie in ritmul toporistilor, drujbelor si joagarelor
angajate la distanta. Cornucopienii expansiunii capitalului isi dau mana cu
poetii rodniciei nationale chiar la liziera acestei paduri din spatele
orasului.
Asta pentru ca liziera padurii este produsa activ, ea nu exista de la sine,
nu este doar un topos literar care indeamna la comuniune cu natura. Liziera
demonstreaza ca subdezvoltarea a functionat atat ca o prezervare a
bogatiilor naturale, dar si ca reclama lirica si o incitare la exploatare.
Sa fii in curs de dezvoltare insemna sa inviti si sa permiti taierea,
insemna ca poti sa razi de pe fata pamantului padurea dar si ca aici se
descopera teritorii noi si acum. Imprumuturile uriase, datoriile
obligatorii, investitiile gigantice necesita teritorii noi descoperite
intr-un ritm alert, necesita terenuri virane lasate in paragina, pamanturi
parlogite, agriculturi devastate, industrii muribunde si mana de lucru
neprotejata, disponibilizata si disponibila. Asta e una din dovezile
vizibile ca avem de-a face cu o noua liziera circumterestra din ce in ce
mai extinsa care creste acum neintrerupt de pe coastele Columbiei
Britanice, pe Amazon, Congo, Romania, Siberia si pana in Asia de Sud-est

NEW LANDS

Like many other foundational myths, Romanian epic stories mention ancient
rulers dismounting their royal horses in order to start discovering the new
country. The ruler had to dismount in order to discover and start cutting
and clearing the surrounding forest.
Land discovery discloses to us the fact that nearly every territorial
taking-into-possession is followed by cutting down the forest cover in
order to discover and create a proper country.
After the new world, the age of discovery, the scramble for Africa, the
biggest recent age of territorial discoveries started after 1989. Appalling
ecological disasters, Chernobyl and heavy industrial pollution and
containment have somehow managed to isolate the communist gulag archipelago
and transform large areas into a no-go Zone, practically an unofficial raw
material reservation where the dreams of new economy capitalism became
reality. The sinister ring of this archipelago had also something
unwillingly paradisiacal, like a forlorn and lonesome continental version
of a wild and colonially promising New Zealand prison-world.
The Iron Curtain and its walls have kept large parts of the communist
archipelago in a state of semi-wilderness, unaccessible to entrepreneurs,
and far from the reach of land rover Camel trophy capitalism. The present
images demonstrate that the middle ages have not yet been superseded, they
are somehow just pushed elsewhere or kept alive in newly discovered
territories of the second and third world. The expansive middle age with
its pioneering spirit and Promethean deforestation is not just a historical
period of the past, it is a state of affairs where clear-cutting and
internal colonization work in concert with the beat of axes and chainsaws.
Free-market cornucopians shake hands with the local bards of national
bounty in the same clearing, a clearing growing on the outskirts of the
forest just behind the modern city.
That clearing is actively produced, it does not stand on it own, it is
influenced by the literary topoi, but it is not just a locus that discloses
our communion with nature. The clearing demonstrates that underdevelopment
can quickly turn into hospitable over-exploitation. Underdevelopment has
acted as a preserving factor for natural resources and also as an economic
teaser of epic proportion about untapped resources. Under-development was
both an invitation and a permission to start discovering new lands and
clearing new ground just when the developed world has stopped doing that at
home. Huge debt, massive bailouts, big loans. gigantic investments rest
heavily on new territorial discoveries and deforestation somewhere else.
The capitalist world needs and feeds on dying agricultures, devastated
industries, abandoned cooperatives, derelict areas, planned economies in
shambles and unprotected labor ready for hire. (Stefan Tiron)

Demetrescu, Alina Buga si Catalin Burcea cu scopul de a crea o platforma de
cercetare si promovare a productiei artistice contemporane. Asumandu-si
functia de spatiu laborator, Alert Studio propune o intalnire intre
artisti, idei, directii si discursuri din zone conceptuale si spatii
culturale diferite. Sunt importante si apreciate gandirea critica si
interogatia ca metode de cercetare a contextului cultural-artistic
contemporan.
ALERT studio functioneaza ca o galerie de proiect, conectand trei directii
de explorare artistica - PINK | RED | WHITE - intr-un singur spatiu. Insa
aceste coordonate nu inseamna indexare, restrictie si etichetare. Ele se
pot intersecta si nuanta, pot oricand dialoga si declansa dezbateri.

ALERT studio is an independent project initiated by Raluca Demetrescu Alina
Buga and Catalin Burcea in order to create a platform of research and
promotion of contemporary artistic production. Taking on the function of
alaboratory space, Studio Alert proposes a meeting between artists, ideas,
directions and speeches from different areas of conceptual and cultural
spaces. Critical thinking and interrogation are important and valued as
research methods in the contemporary cultural and artistic field.
ALERT studio stands as a gallery project, connecting three areas of
artistic exploration - PINK | RED | WHITE - into one space. But these
coordinates do not mean indexing, labeling and restriction. They may
intersect, combine in new shades, and may always communicate and trigger
debates.
