Nieuwsbrief januari 2009 / Newsletter January 2009 Barooni / Roland Spekle (English version below) My Ultradeep I, een multidisciplinaire voorstelling van Marko Ciciliani, uitgevoerd door Bakin Zub, geproduceerd door Barooni My Ultradeep I is een avondvullende compositie voor instrumenten, elektronica en licht van Marko Ciciliani. De speciaal ontworpen lichtcompositie is complementair aan de muziek. My Ultradeep I markeert tevens de start van Ciciliani’s nieuwe ensemble, Bakin Zub. My Ultradeep I” werpt een blik op de vijf zintuigen, waarmee we voelen, ruiken, proeven, horen en zien. Vervolgens neemt het je mee op een zoektocht naar het vermeende 6e zintuig, het metafysische begrip voor het “zelf”. De film werd echter een ware hit. De centrale figuur in de film is de onweerstaanbare Irma Vep. Met haar aantrekkelijke en geëmancipeerde karakter was ze een van de eerste onafhankelijke vrouwen op het scherm. Een nieuw genre in de film was geboren: de Vamp! Jeanne of the Dark is het artistieke onderzoek van Marko Ciciliani naar het wezen van de vamp, waarin een palet aan beelden en stilistische en culturele referenties worden gepresenteerd, variërend van sexuele identiteit, erotiek tot cannibalisme. 10 maart 20.30 uur, Theater Kikker, Utrecht http://www.theaterkikker.nl Arnoud Noordegraaf en Robert van Heumen ‘Solitude’, geproduceeerd door Barooni Solitude is een audiovisuele voorstelling van Robert van heumen en Arnoud Noordegraaf. Gebaseerd op het boek The Invention of Solitude van Paul Auster, voert Solitude de bezoeker in zijn verbeelding langs tijdelijke verblijfplaatsen over de hele wereld, vanuit één en dezelfde intrigerende ruimte. In al deze plaatsen ervaart de bezoeker, net als de hoofdpersoon in het boek, een zelfverkozen eenzaamheid, die hem dichter bij zichzelf, zijn doelen, motivaties en passies brengt. In dit isolement wordt de bezoeker in een welhaast David Lynchiaanse sfeer zich meer en meer bewust van de kleine details en alledaagse geluiden en beelden. Maar zonder houvast en referentiekader wordt hij ook heen en weer geslingerd tussen korte momenten van extase en een onderhuids gevoel van spanning. Solitude is een eigenzinnige audiovisuele voorstelling, die interessante raakpunten heeft met de beeldende, installatiekunst. In Solitude zijn geen musici of acteurs op het toneel te zien; de bezoeker neemt plaats in het hoofd van de protagonist. Met hoofdtelefoons op en gescheiden van elkaar door gaasdoeken, waarop beelden geprojecteerd worden, bevinden de bezoekers zich in een geïsoleerd, audiovisueel décor. Terwijl de verhaallijn zich ontvouwt, zal de individuele ervaring van de bezoeker niet voor iedereen gelijk zijn. 18 t/m 21 maart, 21.00 uur, Theater Frascati, Amsterdam http:// www.theaterfrascati.nl http://www.inexcelsisvideo.net/ http://www.hardhatarea.com/ Ensemble MAE ‘Robert Ashley Portret’ – Maerz Musik, Berlijn Dit programma is opgedragen aan de Amerikaanse componist en muzikale ontdekkingsreiziger Robert Ashley. Ashley zal aanwezig zijn en het voor het MAE geschreven Tap Dancing in the Sand’ met de groep uitvoeren alsmede een solo uitvoering geven van het hypnotiserende Love is a good example. Robert Ashley (1930) heeft aan de bron gestaan van multidisciplinaire muziek/ tekst/ videovoorstellingen en is internationaal vermaard om zijn vernieuwende opera’s. Zijn opera’s zijn inmiddels erkende klassiekers en buitengewoon origineel in hun stijl en uitgesproken Amerikaans zowel in hun thematische keuze als het gebruik van de taal. Tijdens de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1889 in Parijs maakte het westen voor de eerste keer uitgebreid kennis met het vreemde, het exotische. Ook op het gebied van de muziek: zo brachten klanken uit Andalusië en Java grote verwondering teweeg bij componisten als Debussy en Satie, en begon er een tijdperk van fascinatie voor andere, ongewone klanken. Door de huidige globalisering zijn al die klanken inmiddels niet vreemd en exotisch meer: het enige exotische lijkt nu nog de materie zelf, de bouwsteen die een wereld op zich blijkt - niet in een model te vatten. Instabiel, maar daardoor des te vitaler. In het programma Exotica laat Ensemble MAE zich door een aantal exotische elementen transformeren, zonder stil te staan bij identiteiten of tradities. Er is vrij spel gegeven aan componisten die werken met natuurkundige, geologische of digitale noties: een inkijk in het schijnbaar bekende en vertrouwde basismateriaal geluid. Peter Adriaansz, Cor Fuhler en Claudio Baroni schreven nieuwe werken voor dit programma. De composities van Claudio Baroni en Martin Padding gaan vergezeld van film- en videowerken, respectievelijk van Fabian Marcaccio en J.C. The film's central figure is the irresistible Irma Vep, personified by actress Jeanne Roques, alias Musidora. Her seductive, emancipated character made her one of the earliest liberated screen women and gave rise to a new genre in film, The Vamp! Jeanne of the Dark is Terre Thaemlitz’ and Marko Ciciliani's artistic investigation of the vamp, presenting a palette of imageries and stylistic and cultural references, spanning from gender issues around the bad/good girl syndrome, across eroticism and the heavy metal genre to cannibalism. 10 maart 20.30 uur, Theater Kikker, Utrecht http://www.theaterkikker.nl Arnoud Noordegraaf and Robert van Heumen ‘Solitude’, produced by Barooni Solitude is an audiovisual performance of Arnoud Noordegraaf and Robert van Heumen. Based on the book The Invention of Solitude of Paul Auster, Solitude takes the visitor in his imagination along various places in the world, seen from a similar, intruiging space. The visitor experiences a sense of being alone, just like the main character in Auster’s book, which brings him closer to himself, his goals, his motivations and passions. In this isolation, and in an atmosphere reminscent of David Lynch, the visitor is becoming more and more aware of the small details and the everyday sounds and images of his surroundings. Without a point of reference he bounces between short moments of ecstacy and a subtle feeling of tension. Solitude is an idiosyncratic audiovisual performance, with interesting aspects of visual art and installations. There are no actors or musicians in Solitude, which enables the visitor to reside in the head of the protagonist of Auster’s book. With headphones on and seperated from others by see through screens, on which images are projected, the visitors find themselves in an isolated, visual space. Ashley will himself be involved performing ‘Tap Dancing in the Sand’, written for the group, and he’ll do a solo rendition of the hypnotising ‘Love is a Good Example’. Robert Ashley (1930), a distinguished figure in American contemporary music, holds an international reputation for his work in new forms of opera and multi-disciplinary projects. His recorded works are acknowledged classics of language in a musical setting; his operatic works are distinctly original in style and distinctly American in their subject matter and in their use of language. Unusual sounds from lands afar were met with wonder by composers such as Debussy & Satie and hailed a period of fascination with “strange and exotic” soundscapes and musical building blocks. In the present day of globalisation all is musically accepted and no longer strange and exotic. What remains of the exotic is a use of the material itself removed from its original context and all encompassing framework to a new unstable but fresh existence. In the programme Exotica, MAE allows itself to be transformed by ‘exotic’ elements, without identifying with traditions and free reign is given to composers to work with natural sound, or electronics (present or historical) and the basic building blocks of sound itself. Peter Adriaansz, Cor Fuhler and Claudio Baroni have written new compositions for this programme. The works of Claudio Baroni and Martijn Padding are accompanied by videoworks of Fabian Marcaccio and J.C.
