Locatie in Bandung: plasa Mini Market Pesantran Daarut Tauhid Jl. Gegerkalong Girang, Bandung Indonesia

Wat is Hole in the Earth?

Waar is Hole in the Earth?

ART AND TECHNOLOGY CREATE TUNNEL BETWEEN ROTTERDAM AND BANDUNG

Saturday, December 13th at 11 am, CELL opens Hole in the Earth by Japanese artist Maki Ueda. Hole in the Earth is a digital work of art set in the public space of two cities: Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Bandung, Indonesia. A virtual tunnel straight through the earth makes it possible to communicate directly and publicly with 'the other side of the earth' - in speech, images and sound. Beatrijs Tolk, Cultural Projects Portfolio Manager of the Rotterdam City Centre Board and Bert van Meggelen from Maatwerk Urban Projects and Planning will put the 'hole in the earth' into use simultaneously with the residents of the Daarut Tauhid kampong in Bandung.

Where: Square at the Diergaardesingel, Rotterdam Centre (at walking distance from Central Station)

What is Hole in the Earth?

Both in Rotterdam and Bandung the work of art is situated at a public location that is freely accessible. Both works of art are linked to each other by means of a broadband Internet connection. Hidden under the surface of a Rotterdam city square, state-of-the-art equipment (LCD screen, wide-angle camera lens, microphones and speakers), covered by transparent, bulletproof safety glass, establishes the connection. In Bandung, there is a second Hole in the Earth: installation of a smaller size built into a polyester construction.

Where is Hole in the Earth located?

In Rotterdam, Hole in the Earth is located on an intimate, lively city square situated at the head of the so-called Cultural Axis comprising the city's international sculptural route, galleries and museums. This part fo Rotterdam embodies all aspects of urban life, both the positive and the negatieve. Installing Hole in the Earth at this location will provide a new outlook on the meaning of art in public space in present-day urban environments. Daarut Tauhid is a small, active and self-sufficient community where the application of modern communication technology plays and important part in the day-to-day life of the kampong residents. In Indonesia, the Daarut Tauhid community functions as a role model for the economic and cultural development of other, small-scale communities.

Hole in the Earth revives that one question from childhood: what does life look like at the other side of the world? Hole in the Earth turns this fantasy into reality. The combination of contemporary art and digital technology creates a virtual 'communication window' bridging the gap between two different cultures and the inherent cultural and language barriers.
