V2_, Instituut voor de Instabiele Media en DEAF03  Dutch Electronic Art 
Festival 2003 nodigen u uit om deel te nemen aan:
1. Seminar ‘Copy the Rights!’, 26 februari 2003 (zie tekst onder Ad 1), 
inschrijven is nu mogelijk.
2. Masterclass ‘Media Ecology’ met Sher Doruff over interdisciplinariteit, 
3 - 7 maart 2003 (zie Engelse tekst onder Ad 2), deadline voor aanmelding: 
31 januari 2003.

Bij zowel het seminar als de masterclass is de voertaal Engels.

Seminar ‘Copy the Rights!’

‘Copy the Rights’! wordt georganiseerd door V2_ in samenwerking met 
Vereniging Digitaal Erfgoed Nederland, Filmmuseum, Virtueel Platform en 
Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst.

In 2002 heeft V2_ in samenwerking met het Virtueel Platform en 
vertegenwoordigers van diverse culturele instellingen in Nederland een 
onderzoekstraject over auteursrecht geďnitieerd. Hierbij is een 
inventarisatie gemaakt van de copyright-aspecten bij creatie, opslag, 
ontsluiting en exploitatie van digitale informatie door culturele 
instellingen. Ook is onderzoek gedaan naar alternatieven voor copyright en 
is er een begin gemaakt met de opzet van een proeftraject om dit onderzoek 
te staven. Naar aanleiding van de resultaten van de werkgroepen zal er een 
beleidsdocument worden geschreven, gericht aan de betrokken ministeries en 
belanghebbenden. Dit onderzoekstraject zal voor de zomer worden afgesloten 
en naar aanleiding van het beleidsdocument zal een discussie worden opgestart.

‘Copy the Rights!’ is een seminar over auteursrecht. Het programma gaat in 
op verschillende auteursrechtelijke aspecten van het digitaliseren en (on 
line) ontsluiten van archiefcollecties en databases. Ook auteursrecht bij 
een veranderende artistieke praktijk komt aan bod: instabiele 
kunstprojecten waarin hergebruik en kopiëren van materiaal van belang is, 
vaak ontstaan uit samenwerkingsverbanden waarin het traditionele 
auteurschap vervaagt.
Tijdens een aantal hands-onpresentaties worden verschillende voorbeelden 
van 'good practice' gedemonstreerd. Nederlandse en internationale 
kunstenaars, onderzoekers en culturele instellingen stellen hierbij hun 
activiteiten aan het publiek voor.

‘Copy the Rights!’ nodigt een aantal prominente buitenlandse sprekers uit, 
als inspiratie voor een debat over alternatieve modellen voor het 
traditionele auteursrecht  copyleft, open source, open content, open 
access  en hun toepasbaarheid in de Nederlandse context.

11.00 uur: Introductie en presentatie van internationale initiatieven
-	Darius Cuplinskas, Soros Foundation (H): ‘Budapest Open Access Initiative’
Het Budapest Open Access Initiative, ontstaan op initiatief van de Soros 
Foundation in Hongarije, is een internationale verklaring die zich inzet 
voor de vrije beschikbaarheid van wetenschappelijke publicaties.
-	Andy Powell, UKOLN (GB): ‘Open Archives Initiative’
Het Open Archives Initiative heeft een open protocol geďnitieerd dat 
inspeelt in op de behoeften van vrije uitwisseling van wetenschappelijke 
publicaties, waardoor onderzoeksdatabases informatie kunnen uitwisselen.
-	Wendy Seltzer, Berkman Center en Electronic Frontier Foundation (USA): 
‘Creative Commons’ en ‘OpenLaw’
Creative Commons is een belangrijk on-lineinitiatief dat auteurs en makers 
in staat stelt om licenties 'op maat' te genereren voor teksten, muziek, 
video en beelden die via het internet gepresenteerd worden.
-	Jon Ippolito, Guggenheim NY en University of Maine (USA): ‘Open Art 
Network’ en ‘Variable Media Network’
Het Open Art Network biedt een scala van aanbevelingen voor het (meer) vrij 
toegankelijk maken van kunstwerken, specifiek gericht op media- en 
internetkunstenaars. Ervaringen vanuit het Variable Media Network, een 
conserveringsproject voor mediakunst, tonen aan dat er een belangrijk 
verband bestaat tussen strikte auteursrechten op een werk en de 
moeilijkheidsgraad van lange-termijnconservering.

14.00 uur: Lunch en hands-onpresentaties
-	Kingdom of Piracy <KOP>: illegaal kopiëren als kunstproject
-	Nederlands Archief Grafisch Ontwerpers (NAGO): auteursrechtproblematiek 
bij ontsluiting van affichecollecties
-	Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst: het internationale 
streaming-mediaproject Playing Field
-	Joost Smiers: auteursrecht en derde wereldproblematiek
-	Vereniging Digitaal Erfgoed Nederland: gebruikt Open Archives Initiative 
voor onstsluiting erfgoedprojecten
-	DiColore: een (open source) applicatie gemaakt voor het Drents Museum in 
Assen
-	Juristen gaan in discussie met de sprekers van het ochtendprogramma
-	Beleidsmakers beantwoorden vragen van het publiek
-	V2_: tussentijdse resultaten van het onderzoekstraject waar deze 
activiteit deel van uitmaakt

Call for Participation
‘Media Ecology’, master class with Sher Doruff about interdisciplinarity
Date: 3 - 7 March 2003

‘Media Ecology’
This master class will attempt to build an exploratory bridge between 
current discourse on collaborative dynamic systems and LiveArt’s practice.

Since the context is inherently non-hierarchical and sensitive to bottom-up 
interaction it will focus on peer-to-peer exchange between the ‘local’ 
participants, guest presenters and an extended community of externally 
linked ‘translocal’ participants. It will address interdisiplinarity and 
interaction between mediums and persons as a processual dynamic with 
real-time, rich media multi-user creation. We will examine the conditions 
and qualia of live, networked, collaborative connections in relation to how 
we, as human agents provoke and negotiate events in distributed, online, 
interactive ‘ecologies’.

During the week focus will fluctuate between theoretical angling and 
practical playfullness. Artists working with issues concerning information 
access, emotional computing, collaborative systems and social networks will 
present their work, interspersed with daily, hands-on, empirical assessment 
of online co-creation. The communication and digital processing of live and 
archived media, tools of LiveArt practitioners, inject a new set of 
conditions that reflect an emphasis on the gradient properties emerging 
from the process that evolve and grow the system itself. This is the 
beginning referent for the week’s activities.

1. Theoretical correlations that will guide discussion within the context 
of real-time multi-user platforms and datamining methodologies include:
- emergence in complex systems
- distributed cognitive environments/pervasive computing technologies
- transformative iteration as aesthetic production
- synaesthetic perception
2. Guest presenters  artists and developers researching related issues will 
share their perspectives and research. Including Sharon Daniel, Michelle 
Teran, Sara Diamond, Just van den Broecke and Anne Nigten.
3. Hands-on presentations  participants will interface with translocal 
participants from the Anatomic Group at Waag Society in Amsterdam in 
assessing the potential and pitfalls of virtual engagement in media rich, 
self-organized, dynamic network scenarios. Playtime, in the enabling 
software environment KeyWorx (formerly KeyStroke), will be structured on a 
project basis, with participants focused on a common set of conditions, 
attributes and criteria relevant to the dynamic processing of media in 
networks. These online sessions will be streamed and archived for remix and 
recontextualization as an exploration of iterative content and dynamic 
change as emergent database.
4. Group projects in the workshop will involve preliminary designs for 
collaborative systems sensitive to cognitive/cultural aspects of real-time 
interaction, processual aesthetics and its relation to data classification, 
storage and access.

KeyWorx, developed at Waag Society, will serve as the primary experimental 
platform for this research. KeyWorx is an R&D project which enables 
collaborative distributed environments for multidisciplinary artists to 
create and disseminate new media performances from a shared workspace to a 
global audience. Live and archived media can be instantiated and modified 
by up to five participants in a session. The performance output is 
broadband streamed and/or beamed to local audiences and web viewers. The 
meeting and live interaction of diverse personalities and skillsets on a 
virtual, global stage will serve as a platform for an analysis of 
collective aesthetics.

Waag Society’s Anatomic group in Amsterdam will be facilitated by Guy van 
Belle, Michelle Teran and Arjen Keesmaat.
