Mini-conferentie over Nieuwe Media in Diaspora

Internet maakt het mogelijk om snel en goedkoop te communiceren over grote
afstand. Niet toevallig gebruiken migranten en vluchtelingen de nieuwe
media op vele manieren om contact te onderhouden met hun thuisland. In
tijden van crisis worden die contacten nog noodzakelijker en intensiever.
Web sites worden message boards en actuele informatiebronnen, platforms
voor contact en informatie, voor het ontplooien initiatieven en het
verspreiden van oproepen, voor interventies en projecten, en voor eigen
radioprogramma's en video's.

Veelal is de bevolking in het thuisland verstoken van de hoogwaardige
techniek die toegang geeft tot deze nieuwe media. Daarom worden combinaties
gezocht met oude media: telefoon, fax, print en radio. Zo kunnen lokaal
postkantoortjes, call centres en radiostations ontstaan die de brug slaan
naar de lokale bevolking.

Vanuit Nederland worden momenteel verschillende  projecten en initiatieven
ontwikkeld waarbij internet en radio worden gebruikt om contacten tussen
diaspora en thuisland op te bouwen. Hoe werkt het en wat is er mogelijk?
Wat kan het bijdragen aan lotsverbondenheid, verzoening, (weder) opbouw?

Met Bruce Girard , auteur van "A passion for radio" en "Mixed Media" (
http://www.comunica.org ) over de praktische toepassingen van oude en
nieuwe media door migranten en ballingen.

Als speciale gast vanuit de Palestijnse gebieden komt Adam Hanieh uit
Ramallah naar  Amsterdam. Hij stond daar aan de wieg van internet radio en
web campaigning. Hij zal verslag doen van de toepassing van tactische media
tijdens het afgelopen beleg van zijn stad.

Adam Hanieh werkt momenteel als onderzoekscoördinator voor de Palestijnse
sectie van Defence for Children International.

Between Home Sickness and the Home Front

Mini-conference about New Media and Diaspora

Internet enables cheap and fast communication across vast distances. It is
no coincidence the migrants and refugees make extensive use of new media to
keep in touch with their home land. In times of crisis these contacts are
even more crucial and they intensify. Web sites become message boards and
sources of up-to-date information, platforms to establish contacts and
develop new initiatives, to spread calls for action, for intervention and
projects, and to distribute self-made radio programs and videos.

Access to the required high-end technology often remains largely out of
reach for the population in the home land, which is why combinations with
older media are investigated: telephone, fax, print and radio. Thus local
post offices, call centres and call booths, and radio stations can emerge
that build a bridge between the international new media infrastructures and
the local population.

Within The Netherlands a number of different projects are currently
developed where internet and radio are used to establish contacts between
the Diaspora and the home land. How does it work and what is possible? What
contribution can these projects make to reconciliation and to the (re-)
construction of the home land? How can a sense of a shared destiny be
reinforced?

Our special guest from the Palestinian territories is Adam Hanieh from
Ramallah. In Ramallah he was one of pioneers of internet radio and web
campaigning. He will report on the use of tactical media during the time
when his city was besieged.

Adam Hanieh is the research co-ordinator for Defence for Children
International / Palestine Section.
