Things to come # 18 presenteert een filmprogramma van en met Irit Batsry. De in New York wonende filmmaker en kunstenaar werkt en leeft sinds 1983 in verschillende culturen. Onthechting, identiteit en de manier waarop de ene cultuur naar de andere kijkt vormen de rode draad in haar werk. Batsry is aanwezig tijdens het programma.
‘Between Intimacy and Distance’ is een eclectisch programma waarin filmmakers hun positie ten opzichte van ‘plaats’ onderzoeken en hoe omgekeerd plaats van invloed is op de positie van de maker.
Het programma is samengesteld met als uitgangspunt Batsry’s film THESE ARE NOT MY IMAGES (NEITHER HERE NOR TRERE), waarin “… de verschillende betekenissen van ‘plaats’: een locatie, een territorium, een context, een situatie, een thuis worden opgeroepen. Het programma spreekt over thuis zijn en (op) iemand(s) anders (plaats) zijn, over identiteit en het ‘de-ander-zijn’, over intimiteit en afstand en over de relatie tussen de ‘eerste’ en de ‘derde’ ” (Irit Batsry).
Het programma bestaat uit films waarin geen onderscheid wordt gemaakt tussen documentaire en fictie (vaak binnen één en dezelfde film of video), geïnspireerd door plaatsen zo verschillend als India en Rusland, de Filippijnen en Brazilië.
Films waarin ontmoetingen verschillende vragen oproepen:
wat is hier? en wat is elders?
hoe kunnen beelden, geluiden en woorden afstand meten en uitdrukking te geven aan nabijheid?
wat is het dat zorgt voor de geest, de essentie, stereotype of de werkelijkheid van een plaats? en hoe verandert, versterkt of weerspreekt de enkelvoudige kijkrichting van de filmmaker deze eigenschappen?

Things to come # 18 presents a cinema program curated by Irit Batsry and containing her latest video-work. The New York-based filmmaker and artist works and lives since 1983 among many different cultures. Detachment, the question about identity and the way in which one culture is perceived by the other form the main themes within her work. Batsry will be present during the program.
‘Between Intimacy and Distance’ is an eclectic program reflecting filmmakers’ questioning of their own position regarding the ‘place’ and inquiring how the place, in turn, affects the position of the maker.
The program was assembled around THESE ARE NOT MY IMAGES (NEITHER HERE NOR THERE) evoking “…the different meanings of ‘place’: a location, a territory, a context, a situation, and a home. It speaks of being at your own place and being (at the place of) another, about identity and alterity, intimacy and distance, about the relationship between the ‘first’ and the ‘third’” (Irit Batsry).
It includes films and videos mixing documentary and fiction (often within the same work), inspired by places as different as India and Russia, the Philippines and Brazil.
It looks at film as a record of an encounter between the maker, the place, it’s inhabitants, and their respective cultural backgrounds.
Encounters that trigger diverse questions:
what is here? and what is elsewhere?
how do images, sounds and words measure distance and how do they convey proximity?
what makes the spirit, the essence, the stereotype, the reality of a place? and how does the filmmakers’ presence and singular way of looking change, reinforce or contradict these attributes?
