JORRITSMA IN BOSTON: NEDERLAND MOET DEEL GAAN UITMAKEN VAN EUROPESE BIOTECH
LITE

Dit zei minister Jorritsma van Economische Zaken op 28 maart 2000 tijdens
de grote life sciences beurs BIO 2000 in Boston (VS). Doel van haar
bliksembezoek aan Boston was het bevorderen van belangstelling van
Amerikaanse bedrijven om te investeren in het Nederlandse life science
cluster. De minister benadrukte in dit verband dat veel bedrijven in deze
sector al voor Nederland hebben gekozen vanwege de uitstekende
kennisinfrastructuur, het hoog opgeleide meertalige personeel, het
gunstige belastingklimaat en de geografische ligging.
Overigens is Europa volgens de minister bezig de achterstand op de
Verenigde Staten op het gebied van life sciences in te lopen. Zo leert een
vergelijking van de cijfers van 1998 en 1999 dat het totale aantal
biotechbedrijven in de VS met 1 procent toenam en in Europa met 14
procent. Terwijl het aantal werknemers in de VS in deze sector met 9
procent steeg, was dat percentage in Europa 17 procent. En terwijl de
inkomsten uit deze bedrijvigheid in de VS stegen met 16 procent was dit
percentage in Europa maar liefst  36!
De minister ging in haar toespraak ook de weerstand die op een terrein van
de life sciences nog bestaat, de toepassing van moderne biotechnologie in
voeding, niet uit de weg. Ze wees erop dat in Nederland 29 procent van de
bevolking aangeeft moeite te hebben met genetisch gemodificeerd voedsel.
Dit is weliswaar een lager percentage dan geldt voor bijvoorbeeld Britten,
Fransen en Italianen, maar het geeft toch aan dat er nog een heleboel
mensen zo hun twijfels hebben. "It's up to you and me to convince these
skeptics. You, by providing good results and useful products, and in
particular by providing open and clear discussion and information on the
subject. Myself and my ministerial colleagues by taking the opinion of the
public seriously, by showing people that we are following the new
developments with a critical eye, and that new products are being
responsibly developed", aldus minister Jorritsma.
