I agree with you both - Thanks Simon!

The 'crisis' has been an excellent excuse for rolling out an ideological
agenda. If there had been a genuine belief in art as a valuable cultural
economy  (engendered by universities, artists, arts and cultural
organisations) funding would have been maintained. After all, and across
borders, arts funding has always been a very small percentage of gpd - and,
in England arts are returning £6 for every £1 it receives - cutting it
doesn't do anything to erase the deficits, on the contrary.

What is good is that people now beginning to come together to fight the
politics behind the cuts  rather than simply the cuts themselves. What
remains worrying is the amount of artists and exhibiting institutions that,
still and increasingly, adapt their output to suit private sponsors and
their agendas. But then, that has perhaps always been the case.
