As the artists are strutting around in the Chernobyl not-so-wasteland,
scrap metal traffickers are engaging in the more serious business of
chopping up any metalic structure or vehicle they can lay their hands
on (actually these wiseguys stay out themselves, and employ bums for
that purpose), cart it out of the zone, and resell it on the scrap
black market for recycling into all kinds of devices likely to hit a
shop near you. This way, the park of hastilly abandonned firetrucks
and dumped transport helicopters has been reduced in the proportion of
7 to 1 in the past few years as reported in the Saturday magazine of
Le Monde of last week-end. I wonder what Tarkovsky would made of all
this ...
