i do not doubt this Alan, apropos of which I once came across an nice old
AT&T add I have somewhere advertising transcontinental telephone in the US
with a reference to the time of the "ping" from coast to coast and return
.... x miles in x seconds .....
the genealogy of computing and indeed *nix oweth mucho to the old systems of
telegraphy and telefony .....
