Early speech probably followed from expressive grunts, and other things we
still do when talking to animals. Surprise, caution, awe, sorrow, getting
someone's attention .. to paraphrase Humboldt,  "emotions in the chest
carved the breath."

But also humans watched animals closely and imitated what they saw and
heard. Birds sing, and as we know, for example American native dances,
imitating birds' movement and dress was a big deal.
