Subject: ncc 48 netART community congress | graz

[apologies for any cross-postings!]

The net art platform mur.at -- established in 1998 as a strategic alliance
of art initiatives and artists of Graz, and dedicated to creating an
electronic network -- is pleased to announce the upcoming _ncc 48 netART
community congress_ being held in Graz and online during 48 hours of input
and output.

|---------------------------------------------------
|--- ncc 48
|--- netART community congress
|--- opening: october 25th, 12:00 cet
|--- closing: october 27th, 12:00 cet
|--- dom im berg, graz/austria
|----------------------------------------------------

http://ncc.mur.at/

ncc48 stands for 48 hours of non-stop information, documentation,
discussions, reflections, and productions in analog and virtual space. the
topic is "the internet in the context of art". Condensing information is
the intention of ncc48, the congress is the medium. Over a time-line of 48
hours international artists, scientists, theorists, computer experts and
the scheme-team will discuss, report and reflect on topics succeeding one
another in a temporal rhythm and forming the "content back bone" of ncc48.
There will also be concurrent workshops, chats, lectures and presentations
of networkart projects.

The whole programm of ncc 48 is set up as a network of interrelated issues
addressed by the also interrelated designed contributions of all
co-operators, contributors and the audience.

The following 48 HOUR SPEAKERS have been invited to address those
interelations and to constantly moderate the whole process of carrying out
the ncc 48 netART community congress both on site and online:
Josephine Bosma, NL; Andreas Broekmann, D; Katharna Gsoellpointner, A;
Derrick de Kerckhove, CAN; Ulli Meybohm, D

open_source & free software
- ---------------------------------------
october 25 | 2:00 pm cet
The application of open source models on the internet in "net" architecture
& "net" art may well be one of the most innovative scenarios for the future
and will radically change the current situation. But how compatible is the
"open source model", with all its guidelines ("open source definition") and
as a working model, with net art projects? How could the further
development of "free net art" be conceived in analogy to the development of
"free software"?
PARTICIPANTS: Maia Engeli, Kerstin Hoegger, Technical University, Zurich,

neighbour.net
- ---------------------------------------
october 25 | 10:00 pm cet
Once again, the metaphor 'web' has to be tested: In which way have the
channels of communication and electronic exchangeable forms changed the
idea of what neighbourhood, seen as a cultural overlapping and
transgression, can be? Why are the often geographically closest regions
basically a blank spot on the map of net based communication and
production? Does it still make any sense to think about processes of
cultural exchange in this way?
PARTICIPANTS: Kristian Lukic, Media Education Centre KUDA.org, Novi Sad,
YU; Zeljko Blace, Multimedia Institute, Zagreb, CRO; Walter van der
Cruijssen, desk.org, Berlin, D (remote); Peter Tomas Dobrila, Multimedia

transfer.net
- ---------------------------------------
october 26 | 4:00 pm cet
_transfer.net_ deals with the framework conditions of everyday/popular net
cultures (i.e. net cultures having, among other things, always some sort of
economic motivation) and the increasing intermeshing of entertainment and
consumption cultures on the one hand and net cultures on the other. How are
the popularization of connectivity ("get connected", Nokia) and the
individualization of presence on the net ("your personal homepage")
affecting the framework conditions for all types of net art? Is it possible
to maintain a counter-cultural net art or community concept in a time when
net-based discourses are increasingly becoming merchandise-type discourses
 ("satisfy your lust", Siemens)?
PARTICIPANTS: Andreas Broeckmann, D; Verena Kuni, D; konsum.net (Margarethe
Jahrmann, Max Moswitzer), A; Station Rose (Elisa Rose, Gary Danner), A/D
carried out by MiDiHy | http://midihy.org

net & literature
- ---------------------------------------
october 26 | 8:00 pm cet
The project is mainly dedicated to the relationships between old (physical)
and new (simulated) spaces -- referring to spaces in their capacity as
cultural terrain. How can narratives be delivered in new spaces? How are
constructions of "We" developing in these new spaces? What does "presence"
mean under such conditions? What does "public" mean and what would "the
private" be under such conditions?
PARTICIPANTS: Dzevad Karahasan; Beat Mazenauer, CH, die flut (Thomas
Ballhausen, Xaver Bayer, Julia Hadwiger, A); hugi (Claus D. Volko, D),

Although the creative process is liberated from the limitations of matter,
it nevertheless is dependent on the medium of the work. Comprehensive
technical knowledge is imperative. Furthermore a theoretical programmatic
grasp of net.spaces is necessary, whereby techno-aesthetics in its severity
places the highest demands. And in the end the question: do the present
instruments of discursive forums (such as mailings lists) suffice or should
we advocate "The Birth of the Net-Gallery" which describes that system of
power, deciding on art and non-art? Probing the necessity of elaborating a
productive and distributive apparatus that is to envelope the net-work of
art (collectors, dealers, curates, critics, ncc48 organizers, etc.).

Wt7.11 Info: 25.11.2001, 14.00 hours

On November 25th V2_ organises its monthly program Wiretap on the topic of
Navigation in Virtual Space. This program is being held within the wider
framework of V2_'s annual theme Grounding, which examines the impact of
technology on urban space.
During the wiretap artists, software developers and theoreticians explore
navigation systems in virtual space and human-machine interfaces. Navigation
systems in virtual environments are increasingly becoming based on 'motion
tracking' (the registration of movement). We can clearly detect a tendency
to experiment more with interfaces which feel more natural or direct to the
user than the traditional mouse/keyboard interface (the so-called command
interface).

The human body is an excellent point of departure to examine these
developments on a micro- as well as on a macro level. The bio-mechanical
activities of the body, ranging from walking (cfr. SPIN), turning of the
head (cfr. Yves Bernard) and the blinking of the eye (cfr. Andrea Polli and
Neil Wiernik, tbc), are movements we perform daily and thus do not need to
*learn* anew. Proponents of bodily-controlled interaction hold the
assumption that computer technology becomes more accessible and natural for
a larger audience by usage of *corpo_real interfaces* .

- -- so we will probably be focusing here on questions of control,
participation, perception, and that O so lovely interface: the body -

Andrea Polli will perform a 20' solo audio piece with eye-tracking
technology.

Yokohama triennial in The Red brick house 2f
from 2nd of Nov to the end of this festival

This is a research project for Yokohama Triennial
through the web mail service in Japan in 18th Oct to 1st of Nov.
All comments, opinions about this art festival by users of this web service.

But most of all they are trying to make a date at this art festival with a
fictitious character who we made on this web service.

With the development of internet in cell phone communication, these kind of
web services called Deai-kei site in Japan are became popularized for
typical encounter.
Mostly users are looking for his/her new friend , partner for sex, or
sometimes marriage partner seriously through these E mailing service.
And of course many sex crimes are happen around these web services.

We already had shown the contribution of John Miller's work in our Yokohama
triennial projects " Relational Positions " that is made by 220 personal ads
from Village Voice
http://www.trans.artnet.or.jp/~transart/works/j.html

Like he noted for this work we can see some of stereotyped cartoon monsters
on his/ her self representations.
And with his 4 different diagrams we can see those characters how connected
with their economical situation, race, sexuality reflecting each domestic
taste , we can check each weird conflicts of expressions with their amateur
copy writings for themselves making zombies or second hand sex commodities.

Comparing John Miller's research on Village Voice ,users self
representations on this web site in Japan are just directly made with their
cartoon character icons as each their identification made from this
service's option from the first.
And the way of user's descriptions in this web site is more like made by
kind of teenager talking or more childish way.
Even the message written by middle aged person,
he sometimes put childish nickname for himself.
and in here with the first message they must impressed I am safety hiding
sex appeals.

The way of expression looks just like Liam Gillick's work in Yokohama
triennial now, it is maybe completely different of his aim, now the
administration of this art festival is putting loosely a message board on
his colorful plastic chairs
noted
" Don't touch (me) " in Japanese
and moreover in Japanese language, the way of saying like " Notion " at
kinder garden.
Even artist already tried some kind of boring family restaurant to show as
understandable minimal art interior set.
Now It looks this works concept is duplicate non intentionally to destroy
works by organizers themselves.
You can check out our photo report at
http://www.trans.artnet.or.jp/~transart/fes/takeme.html

And so with this research project for Yokohama triennial
we could take exactly the same way for this art festival itself
to show kind of sex war comedy in this kinder garden played by spectators
themselves as our last project in here.

Thank you very much for all collaborators.
We'll keep rolling our projects in some different places near future.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Media in Transition: globalization and convergence, an international conference

conference date: 10-12 May 2002
abstract deadline: 1 January 2002

Terms such as "globalization" and "convergence" increasingly dominate
discussions of our media environment, yet their meanings remain vague
and context specific. Many factors make it difficult to make broad
statements about these trends: The uneven flow of cultural products
across national borders, the still nascent nature of the new media
environment, unpredictable patterns of use and meaning among media
consumers, diverse national histories of cultural exchange or
isolation, an unstable business climate which alternately encourages
and discourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

Many core issues remain to be explored: Will globalization reduce or
expand the world's cultural diversity? Will new technologies empower
international media makers to enter the American marketplace or leave
them more exposed than ever before to U.S. cultural exports? How do
we reconcile the competing forces of media convergence and media
fragmentation that are shaping the current communications
infrastructure? What patterns can we discern among convergent content
and audiences across media forms and international borders? What are
the implications of media convergence not only at the corporate
level, but also at the grassroots level where users are in control of
content, context, and flow?

Two years ago, MIT hosted the first Media in Transition conference,
bringing together an international array of scholars from many
different disciplines to examine the process and consequences of
media change. This year, we invite you back to MIT for the second
Media in Transition conference. As in the first conference, we
encourage reflection across disciplinary boundaries, and among
theorists and practitioners -- a citizenly discourse makes core ideas
accessible to a broad public.

Focusing especially on North American, European and Asian
experiences, the conference will provide a platform for a
historically and culturally comparative analysis of our media past,
present and future. As in the first Media in Transition conference,
presentations and multi-media demonstrations will be framed by
plenary "conversations" in which distinguished panelists will speak
briefly and then participate in extended dialogue with the audience.

We solicit papers on all aspects of media in transition, including:

changing peripheries and centers
world music-- world media
news and information in the digital age
the internet, policy and popular culture
transnational political activism
cultural disorder: regional censorship and trans-national media
unofficial cultures, cultures of resistance
cultural authority/autonomy/markets
historical precedents/precursors
global media flows, local media meanings
intellectual property: constructions, enforcements, implications
cyber citizenry and the global public sphere
digital culture: language and infrastructure
convergence and fragmentation
public service vs the marketplace: traditions, histories and futures
building a global base for local media production
global fusion and hybridity
"The Third Culture" -- identity in an age of dislocation
the globalization of the media audience
re-examining "the global village"
the transformation of television
narrative forms and cultural change

From: Tom Sherman <twsherma@mailbox.syr.edu>
Subject: Nerve Theory/Syr & Mtl

Le Moyne College's Coyne Performing Arts Center and the LeMoyne
Student Programing Board present:

the American premiere of "THE DISCONNECTION MACHINE"
by Nerve Theory (Tom Sherman and Bernhard Loibner)

Jesuit Theater, Thursday, November 8, 2001, 9:00pm*
Le Moyne College, Syracuse, New York

Nerve Theory creates VidSonic environments that are
immersive, intense and challenging. THE DISCONNECTION MACHINE is
a 45-minute performance that fingers global telecommunications as
the trigger of human disconnection. Disembodied voices, free-
floating images, asynchronous messaging, addiction to amplitude
and data-density, the fragmenting effects of the multi-syndrome,
are distancing people from their sense of place and peace of
mind.

Tom Sherman (U.S./Canada) and Bernhard Loibner (Austria)
have been recording and performing together since 1993. As Nerve
Theory they have performed in Paris, Vienna, Linz, Stuttgart and
New York. Their recordings, video and texts are available at:
http://www.allquiet.org/

Following this Syracuse appearance, Nerve Theory will
perform THE DISCONNECTION MACHINE at ELEKTRA 2001 in Montreal,
Quebec, November 10, 2001. The ELEKTRA 2001 festival also
features performances by Oval, Monty Cantsin, Louis-Philippe
Demers, Jean Piche, Yves Daoust, Louis Dufort, and Purform:
