<nettime> extra! post-9/11 news digest [mod note; armitage x2 + andrews]

     [mod note: i abbreviated (<...>) the news items in this 
      digest because the URLs provided still work (for now). 
      over the last few weeks, a LOT of people have sent in
      news items, which poses a problem: they're interesting
      for the most part, but nettime isn't primarily a wire
      service--and as the list grows (-l/-digest just passed
      2100 subscribers today...), tendencies like forwarding
      news items can become more problematic. the moderators 
      usually ask people to re-send news with a URL + remarks 
      about why a news story is relevant to nettime as such--
      which seems like a minimal and flexible way to strike a
      balance on this aspect of the list. cheers, t]

Conflict Will Follow Taliban's Fall

Summary

The United States has begun its military campaign in
Afghanistan without first forging a post-Taliban
regime. Although opposition forces will take
advantage of U.S. air strikes to attempt to drive the
Taliban from power, this will only usher in another
round of fighting among the victors. Because the
United States needs a friendly and stable regime in
Kabul to facilitate its primary mission of rooting out
Osama bin Laden and his Afghan Arabs, it will find
itself drawn into an attempt at nation-building in
Afghanistan. This is an intractable problem that could
draw the United States into a lengthy, costly and
ultimately doomed engagement in Afghanistan at the
expense of its primary mission.

American Action Is Held Likely in Asia

      WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 - Terrorists tied to Osama bin Laden's network and
based in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are among the likely targets 
of future covert and overt American actions, United States officials said 
today.

The officials gave no timetable; they said the campaign against the groups
linked to Mr. bin Laden and his group, Al Qaeda, is global and may last for
years. But they said that the East Asian groups have expanded their operations
in recent years, exchanging money, personnel, materiel and experience with the
bin Laden organization and its allies, and that they pose a clear and present
danger to American institutions overseas.

Very interesting interview.  Its quite likely that the CIA provoked the
USSR into the war, but I really think that the Afghanistan war had very
little effect on the collapse of the Soviet Union. I think it pales into
insignificance next to the efforts of COCOM (CIA) to destabilize the Soviet
economy and bankroll the Russian Mafia with hard currency, or even the
internal effects of Perestroika.
