Thursday 25 May . 9.00pm
The Lux "Listen Up" lecture series presents Lev Manovich
Response and moderation by Matthew Fuller

Lev Manovich is a major theorist of cinema and the new medias, bringing a
broad knowlege of the history and theory of film to bear on both the
legacy of cinematic language on new media tools and practices, and the
effect of digital media on contemporary cinema.

In his lecture at the Lux, Lev Manovich will be drawing on his new book
"the language of new media". Going into detailed analysis of formal
devices that feature in both the language of cinema and computer-based
media, Manovich maps out the close relationship of film language to the
technical and stylistic development of new digital media. He also examines
the new possibilities for cinema that digital media provide.

one day conferenceSaturday 27 May . 10.00am - 5.00pm

Following the success of last years Critical Images/Critical Mass event,
the Lux once again brings together an impressive line-up of cross-media
practitioners and thinkers to map and debate issues at the leading edge of
contemporary moving-image making. The net is a new horizon for thinking
about the moving image, and a host of independents and media conglomerates
have their eye on the digital frontier. With the profusion of new hybrid
broadcast channels and microcinemas hungry for content, the traditional
media of film and video begin entry into a single digital currency, and
come into contact with an indigenous - and apprehensive - network culture.
But what does the net mean as a context for film and video artists? New
video streaming technologies, the wwws utopian promise of global
visibility, and the tacit offer to move beyond the frame and engage with
non-linear forms make the net an intriguing prospect for moving image work.
But for critical film and video artists engaged in dialogue with or seeking
intervention into the technologies and contexts of their medium, the web is
a more tangled proposition. Having made the conceptual leap from
photographic to digital forms, these artists must engage in dialogue with a
critical net culture, holding open portals for independent work within the
connective commercialised bricolage. The Line-up Ana Kronschnabl presents
Plugincinema . Nick Crowe presents Discrete Packet . Film On-line? A panel
discussion with Ana Kronschnabl, Nick Crowe, Jon Jost and Lev Manovich,
Chair: Honor Harge . Bureau of Inverse Technology (Kate Rich) . Chris Wilch
. Animal Char . Culture Jamming? A panel discussion with Kate Rich, Chris
Wilcha, Jim Fetterley and Rich Bott, Chair : Chris Darke
