You are reading the second issue of the Ars Electronica newsletter,
focusing on the winners of the Prix Ars Electronica 2000
(http://prixars.orf.at). The Prix Ars Electronica 2000 enters its 14th
edition with 1,800 entries from 59 countries, thus presenting itself once
again as the representative international show of achievements in art,
research and entertainment in the digital age.

German version of this announcement at http://www.aec.at/nextsex

1.1 Prix Ars Electronica 2000
....................................

"Particularly at a time, when the digital media are being taken over more
and more by start-ups and e-business, the Prix Ars Electronica has an
important role with its position and focus. The intention of the Prix Ars
Electronica since its inception in 1987 has been to provide an
internationally recognized platform for bringing together visionary ideas
and alternative approaches to digital media outside the realm of
industrial norms. With this year's results, the Prix Ars Electronica 2000
continues along this same path into the 21st century," says Dr. Hannes
Leopoldseder, head of the jury as a whole and ORF Director of Information,
whose initial idea led to the establishment of the Prix Ars Electronica in
1987.

With prize money amounting to ATS 1.35 million (US$ 96,428), sponsored for
the first time by A-Online, the Prix Ars Electronica with its cultural
orientation is established as the top international prize for digital
media. The competition as a whole was made possible through support from
Datakom Austria, the VOEST-ALPINE STAHL, the city of Linz and the federal
province of Upper Austria. The young people's category "u19 freestyle
computing" is sponsored by the P.S.K. Austrian Postal Bank.

The Prix Ars Electronica Award Presentation will take place during the Ars
Electronica Festival on Monday, September 4, 2000 at the ORF Upper
Austrian Regional Studio, and will be broadcast live at 9:00 p.m. on the
satellite program 3sat. The program will be conducted by the ORF
moderators Ingrid Thurnher and Josef Broukal.

The best works in all categories will be shown at the O.K Center for
Contemporary Art in the exhibition "Cyberarts 2000" beginning 2 September
2000.

The award winners (Golden Nica and Awards of Distinction) will present
their works to the public during the two-day artists' discussions on 5 and
6 September 2000.

As a documentation of the competition, the book "Cyberarts 2000" will be
published in September 2000 by Springer Vienna/New York as an
international compendium. The best works from the category Computer
Animation/Visual Effects will be available on VHS cassette and DVD.
Excerpts from the prize-winning works in the category Digital Musics will
be published on a CD.

1.2 Jury
....................................

In each category, all entries were judged by a jury of experts. Chairman
of the jury as a whole (without a vote): ORF Information Director Dr.
Hannes Leopoldseder, whose original idea led to the initiation of the Prix
Ars Electronica in 1987.

hello,
we would like to introduce you a new art-project:

http://www.digitalmutations.de

"Digital Mutations" is an exploration, an appeal to get the feel of
memory amputation and revival via memorial photography.
Through the relationship of images and patterns, this collection invites
you to question the truth of human identity.
It's also an open web-gallery for art and culture projects.

Press release 1 mei 2000

Axis @ Inside Out

Exhibition including 4 interactive projects about the =91interior=92 of =
the body

Dutch premiere of 3 international cd-roms

9 - 14 may 2000 (12.30-18.00) Impakt festival, Utrecht, The Netherlands

Sterrenwacht Sonnenborgh, Sonneburg 2, (free entrance)

 13 may 2000 (14.00-16.00) Presentation in the Couch Club,=20

't Hoogt 4, Utrecht (free entrance)

curated by Deanna Herst, Axis

During the Impakt festival in Utrecht Axis presents =91Inside Out=92, an =
exhibition including three cd-roms and a website about the =
=91interior=91 of the bio-technological human body.=20

New technologies have produced radical changes in the human body. =
Protheses, facelifts, sex-change operations and implantations bring "man =
as a construction" ever closer. Until now representations of the body =
primarily focused on the consequences for the external appearance of =
humans.

Jane Prophet, Patricia Piccinini, Linda Dement and Mouchette confront =
the viewer with the "interior" of the new body. In their interactive =
projects, in a critical but also often humorous way they raise the =
consequences of bio-technology for discussion, and pose questions about =
the relation of identity and the body.

Participants

LUMP-CD, (cd-rom, 1999, AUS) Patricia Piccinini/Peter Hennessey

LUMP-CD is an expedition through the optimistically tinted 3D world of =
Patricia Piccinini's biotechnological enterprise The Mutant Genome =
Project (TMGP). TMGP has developed the first "designer baby" in the =
world, the "LUMP." LUMPs are available in many colors, sexes and shapes, =
and hardly fulfil the definition of "human" any more. LUMPCD is a =
playful commentary on the ethical questions surrounding biotechnology =
and genetic manipulation.

www.lumpcd.com

In My Gash, (cd-rom, 1999, AUS) Linda Dement

The depressed, abused, criminal and dangerous "Lying Ugly Mess Bitch" =
plays the central role in In My Gash. Her body functions as a visual =
archive for her anything but rosy life story. The interface consists of =
animations of apertures in her body, which afford the user access to her =
horror world.

The Internal Organs of a Cyborg, (cd-rom, 1999, GB) Jane Prophet

The Internal Organs of a Cyborg is about the blurring of the boundaries =
between man and machine, between "human" and "post-human," and about the =
definition of the physical "Self" in contemporary culture, governed by =
technology. In this interactive photo-novel in science fiction style =
Prophet shows the influence of pharmaceutical manipulations on the body =
of a cyborg.

http://www.cairn.demon.co.uk/cyborg/cyborg.htm

Flesh and Blood, Mouchette: www.mouchette.org/flesh

The "digi-persona" Mouchette, notorious for the mythology that has =
formed around her "true" identity, presents her physical form in Flesh =
and Blood. But nevertheless, she still remains anonymous now: the =
interface consists of macro-shots of her tongue, eyes, nose and ears. =
She lets the audience become acquainted with her parents through this =
sensory path. Then follows an unexpected confrontation with her "flesh =
and blood."

Pragmatism
The extremes of conversion of visual dimensions, the abrupt telescoping of
viewpoints and the instant shortening of distances have become a daily
exercise in the technosphere.
Exit the technosublime, fascination with the medium and digital
megalomania.
Gulliver in the eye of the Liliputians
The question remains: which solutions function on our scale? What should we
put in the wires?
Gulliver in the eye of the Liliputians
Which images-sounds-words will go through these tubes? Who should I speak
to? Who am I working with?
Gulliver in the eye of the Liliputians
JV4 has been constructed after pragmatic reflection: how should things be
done? How should we produce ourselves, how should we work together? How
should technology be used, without being used by it?
Gulliver in the eye of the Liliputians
Disproportionate intimacy, a miniature public
Detournement and harnessing play cat and mouse
The stakes of technology have familiarised us with a paradox: tools that
allow us
Detournement and harnessing play cat and mouse
to communicate are the by-products of spy systems, the webcam becomes
democratic
Detournement and harnessing play cat and mouse
at the same time as the network of closed-circuit cameras for shopping
centres.
Detournement and harnessing play cat and mouse
We now have to live with this paradox.
That is to say playing with (making use of) one's body
  The explicit body of performance
How should one play with (make use of) one's body in the digital world?
 The explicit body of performance
What is the value of organic presence as regards the machine?
  The explicit body of performance
But also taming new bodies.
 The explicit body of performance
What is the reality of virtual bodies? How do you mourn a foetus in 3D?
Idea of the outline as a true geography
Because, if they propagate words, the new media nevertheless remain
stopping-off points in the indirect form
Idea of the outline as a true geography
Thus we can ask ourselves to what extent they modify words,

And how they hawk these ideas of evaporation of identity

From: Alice Smits <113163.120@compuserve.com>
Subject: press release Hotel New York PS1

Hotel New York PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Gallery 205

Hotel New York is an initiative of the Dutch artist Jeanne van Heeswijk,
that marked her participation in the International Studio Program 1998/99
at PS1. Jeanne has passed the torch to Alice Smits to organize Hotel New
York 2000.

Gallery 205 at PS1 is transformed into a replica of a hotel room of Hotel
New York in Rotterdam, located in the former head office of the
Holland-America line. Until 1978 people from all over Europa left for
America from this harbor town to find their luck across the ocean. The
studio is called the Willem de Kooning Room, in memory of Willem de Kooning
who left Rotterdam as a stowaway on board of the Holland-America line to
New York.

With Hotel New York PS1 a cultural line to New York is created. During the
year Alice Smits will invite artists to stay, work and present projects,
performances, and lectures to the public. As a hotel room, Hotel New York
echoes the history of travel and thus reflects the migration and nomadic
movements of the contemporary art world. While artists and curators travel
all over the world, the hotel room is where it all happens. Hotel New York
is a space for live events focusing on artists projects that emphasis
interdisciplinarity and public interaction. In the intimate situation of a
living space, Hotel New York offers an interesting context for making and
presenting such projects within the contemporary art museum.

_____________

Sunday May 7 and Thursday May 11 through Sunday May 14, 2 - 6 PM
Debra Solomon will present Holodeck New York 2000.

Hotel New York will be transformed into a large-scale 3D drawing: Holodeck
New York consists of digital video, webcam-generated video and
semi-fictional web chat narratives.

Solomon is pursuing a worldwide pilgrimage visiting the 'birthplaces of
digital mythology' spanning three continents in 2000: The United States,
Europe and Japan. In America she will visit locations and individuals that
have been instrumental in forming a futuristic image of humans as it
concerns the digital world. This includes biotechnical research facilities,
computer hackers, robotics labs, aerospace facilities, virtual reality
developers, cryotechnic agencies, terreforming institutes which explore
ideas of colonizing space, and those searching for extraterrestial
intelligence. Solomon's digi-persona, the-living, creates an interactive
space where science fiction, phantasy and truth merge. It is expected that
the constant stream of visitors through web-chats and video conferencing
will not only witness this real life, fact-fiction account, but will
actually be instrumental in its' creation."

Born in the Mojave Desert in California Debra Solomon lives and works in
The Netherlands since 1986 where she received her BFA from the Gerrit
Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She has exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum,
Amsterdam, the Kunsthal and the Dutch Electronic Art Festival ('86,'98) in
Rotterdam, the Offenes Kulturhaus and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz,
Austria, and at the recently launched Edith-Russ Haus in Oldenburg,
Germany.
