Holocaust Denial on Trial: Irving v. Lipstadt
URL Archive of Media Clippings: Update for 16 Janaury 2000

Background on the Trial

In her book "Denying the Holocaust; The Growing Assault on Truth &
Memory," Emory University Professor Deborah Libstadt accuses David
Irving, a British writer, of skewing and misrepresenting the facts
regarding the Holocaust. Irving denies that six million people died
in the Holocaust. He puts the number at between 10,000 and 1 million.
He denies that the Nazi's gassed Jews in concentration camps. Irving
is now suing Lipstadt and her publisher Penguin Books for defamation
in a British court. The trial began January 11th and has attracted
worldwide press coverage. Under British law the burden will be on
Lipstadt to prove she did not "defame" Iriving in her book.

Proving the Holocaust, which is the theme of the trial, will focus a
spotlight on the issues and the deniers. The outcome of the trial,
which will take 12 weeks, will have impacts on the history of the
Holocaust for years to come.

As a practical matter, the stakes are very high. The trial offers
the opportunity for all time to expose the deniers as politically
driven anti-Semites who want to remove the weight of the reality of
the horrors of the Holocaust from Facism, Nazism, and white supremacy,
and who want to rehabilitate these ideas as acceptable in mainstream
politics. "Holocaust denial" is absurb in its face, but it is real,
and with more and more generations coming to age who have no direct
experience with World War II, it is a growing threat to truth.

The cutting edge of the trial, which is being heard before a judge but
no jury, will likely be brought to bear on Irving's extremist views
and his false statements about the Holocaust, his manipulation of
historical source mateial to support his denier viewpoint, the truth
of the real number killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust, and Hitler's
role in the 'final solution,"which Irving categorically denies.
Although Irving has sued Lipstadt, the outcome could be a cosmic
boomerang in terms of its results.

Update on Media Coverage

Coverage for the U.S. and international Jewish Press, including
the Jerusalem Post, and the Jewish Telegraphic Service,
http://www.jta.org/ includes daily news reports from Douglas Davis,
a London- based correspondent. The Jerusalem Post coverage can be
found at http://www.jpost.com/

The British press has covered the trial extensively. In particular,
courtroom trial reports have appeared on a daily basis on the British
Broadcasting Corp. website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/ Of note is
the daily coverage by the Irish Times at http://www.ireland.com/
by reporter Rachel Donnelly.

In the U.S. the Atlanta Constitution has covered the trial in depth
every day with courtroom trial reports by Bert Roughton, Jr. which
can be found at http://www.accessatlanta.com/partners/ajc/ Opening
day coverage appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and
the Chicago Tribune all of whom had reporters in the courtroom.

http://www.latimes.com/
http://www.nytimes.com/
http://www.chicagotribune.com/

However, none of these papers provided their readers will any
follow-up coverage nor has any coverage yet appeared in the Washington
Post nor in USA Today. Both the Associated Press and Reuters provided
coverage of the trial which was published in many US and Canadian
papers and on CNN. Both wire services are available from the news
pages of Yahoo. http://www.yahoo.com/

Archive of Media Clips on the Trial

In cooperation with the Nizkor project at http://www.nizkor.org/
an archive was set up this week and will be maintained with news
clippings about the trial.

It is very important to note that this site is not a source of
expertise about the trial and neither am I. There are no statements
from the principals involved nor from their attorneys except as
reported in the news media. The URL below is merely a repository
of media clippings which are publically accessible to anyone with
an Internet account. The clippings archive will be updated every
day or so as long as the trial is in progress.

Readers who use word wrap to read email may find their newsreaders
have clipped long URLs. You may have to cut and past them into your
web browser if clicking on them does not work.
