[Nettime-fr] "Decollection" - Paris Biennale Auction Sale @Paddle8

Biennale de Paris

Press release from October 15th, 2013

Decollection
The status of art in the era of knowledge

Paddle8*, new-generation auctioneers based in New York and Los Angeles, is preparing the âDecollectionâ sale for the Paris Biennale which will take place between 21st October and 3rd November 2013 on the website http://paddle8.com

The Paris Biennale was founded by Andrà Malraux with the aim of providing a meeting ground for those who would shape the art of the future. The 18th edition began on 1st October, 2012 and will end on 30th September, 2014.

The works championed by the Paris Biennale which will be put up for auction on Paddle8 have as a theme the turning of âproduct-valueâ into âactivity-valueâ. It includes experiments, protocols, services, products, documents, social trends or proof of lifestyle.

To decollect art can imply another way of conceiving a collection, different from the traditional accumulation of works which relies on storage. The collector is included from the start in the fresh concept of creation at the very moment the artwork frees itself from traditional specifications. His status is now that of author and not mere collector. Conceiving that new collecting policy challenges the notion of value, material value and ownership.

To decollect art is adopting a new mindset, it means no longer owning but being.

*Paddle8 is an online auction house, connecting buyers and sellers of fine art and collectibles across the Internet. Paddle8 presents two two types of auctions: curated auctions of art and collectibles under $100,000, and benefit auctions in collaboration with non-profits. The company was founded in 2011 by Alexander Gilkes, an auctioneer and LVMH veteran, and Aditya Julka, a Harvard Business School MBA and serial entrepreneur. Paddle8âs platform eases the sale and acquisition of art and collectibles via a fully online auction model, offering the lowest available commissions, no public sales records, extended auction visibility and timelines, and automated post-sale services. To date, Paddle8 has collaborated with over 150 non-profit organizations worldwide to present their benefit auctions online, dramatically expanding the audience of supporters and results for non-profit partners.
