[Nettime-bold] Lux Cinema Presents

AN UNMISSBALE EXCLUSIVE!

KHRUSTALYOV, GET MY CAR! (Khrustalyov, mashinu!)
Alexei German, Russia 1998, 137mins

Screening: 26th-30th, every evening at 7.30pm and Sunday matinee at 3pm

Russia will always be Russia: Russians have never ceased suffering: from the
day before yesterday's oppression by the Czars, to yesterday's Communism to
today's Mafia.

Yuri Glinsky, a brain specialist in charge of a Moscow hospital and Red Army
General, is also the head of a large family. Soused in alcohol, he spends
his time between the hospital, his home and adultery - until 1953, when his
worlds collapses at Stalin's instigation of the KGB's "doctor's plot".
Entangled through confusion with his "double" into an affair tainted with
Anti-Semitism, the General flees, is arrested, sent to the Gulag and
tortured. He is set free as the only possible doctor to save Stalin's lifeŠ

A frantic, stunningly complicated and visually dense journey that stands
alongside the "conditional space" of Fellini's Satyricon, presenting Russia
as one huge communal dwelling that is both hospital and prison.

Through a fantasmagoria of images, and inseparable metaphorical and actual
narrative, German confronts us with what might be understood as historical
truth.
