   Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism
General Editor: Stephen Ross (University of Victoria)
   Introductory Summary:
The Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism (REM) will be the first and
   only resource of its kind
in the world, providing a single location for definitions of all terms
   related to the study of
   Modernism
    across the arts and disciplines
across different locales around the world
across overlapping time frames in different locales
By producing a richly dynamic online resource, the REM will be at once
comprehensive and portable, accessible and detailed, and permanently up to date. It will
   be an essential resource for
anyone looking for a clear guide to the pre-eminent artistic movements
   of the long twentieth
   century.
   Rationale:
In the last fifteen years, Modernist studies have exploded. A field
that appeared on the brink of
extinction at centuryend has returned with remarkable vigour. This
   revival has produced a
vibrant nd constantly expanding ommunity of students and scholars
   for whom a single
comprehensive resource on the key terms of Modernism is now a critical
   necessity. Scholars and
critics are interested as never before in Modernismmanifestations in
   the visual and performing
arts, architecture, literature, film, philosophy, science, and consumer
   culture. The number of
publications in the field has spiked dramatically, and more and more
   new students are coming to
the field. Likewise, established scholars and critics are discovering
   connections amongst
Modernismvarious manifestations, and pushing the boundaries of
   research in interdisciplinary
directions. Public enthusiasm for Modernism has similarly revived in
   recent years, driven in part
by mass media representations (e.g., the television series Mad Men),
   and by exhibitions at major
museums and art galleries around the world (e.g., the major Vorticism
   exhibit touring the world).
Despite this remarkable flourishing, and the demand it has created for
   accessible resources, no
single accessible resource exists either in print or online. Such a
   resource would answer a critical
need for teachers of Modernism who seek to introduce its vast richness
   to their students, for post-
graduate students seeking to solidify their grounding in the field and
   explore points of contact
amongst various versions of Modernism, for established scholars
   discovering new dimensions to
a field that has changed dramatically in a very short time, for
   advanced undergraduates and for
the educated public seeking a user-friendly guide to this
   often-daunting field.
Because the REM is an online resource, its users will be able not only
to look up key terms, but
also to experience elements of those terms that will both enhance their
   understanding of them
and help bring Modernism to life (e.g., film and audio clips, images,
   facsimiles of manuscript
and musical score pages). Given that the generations of students now
   coming to Modernism have
grown up with the internet and think of it as a natural scholarly
   resource, the REM hich will
be the only such resource of its kind in the world as a strong
   likelihood of becoming the go-to
resource. The aim will be to make the REM the standard reference in the
   classroom, in use in
virtually every course on Modernism across the arts and around the
   world.
